'We regret to inform all guests that it is our intention to make 2024 our last year and to sell the B&B at the end of the season
To check availability and make a booking please either use our online booking system or contact Julie or Mike by phone or email at enquiries@straigona.co.uk or send an enquiry directly from this website.
Welcome to Straigona B&B, where we pride ourselves on ensuring our guests have a relaxing and comfortable stay with good local food and advice on all Orkney has to offer. Staying at a B&B provides a more personal experience compared to a hotel, so why not give it a try! Watch our Be Our Guest video - https://vimeo.com/670223650/3632dec0d2
We moved into Straigona in January 2011. The house was purpose built as a B&B by the previous owners. We have stunning views across fields to Inganess Bay and on to the island of Shapinsay. You also have a view of Kirkwall’s small airport which a lot of guests find very interesting. Straigona enjoys the best of both worlds, being semi-rural but only minutes away from the airport and Kirkwall.
We have carried out a lot of work since taking over, everything from new carpets and beds to completely renovating all of the en-suites. We have equipped our rooms with everything we can think of to make our guests stay comfortable, and keeping in mind baggage restrictions for guests flying in, including dressing gowns and toiletries. We also have waterproofs, walking poles and hats, scarves and gloves available along with our ‘Binocular box’ which is very popular.
For keen walkers there are walks on our doorstep and we have our own walks folder and various books. We can also make recommendations from personal experience. We are also members of the RSPB and can advise on good birdwatching sites and, of course, puffin watching between end April and end July.
Julie is half-Orcadian with lots of relatives here, it was also her dream to make Orkney her home. She and Mike got married in Skaill House in 2007.
Straigona is perfectly placed for exploring ‘Mainland’ Orkney and visiting the outer islands, either by ferry or 8 seater Islander plane. Why not take the world’s shortest scheduled flight and get your certificate?!
Just down the road from us you will find Sheila Fleet’s Kirk Gallery and Café - https://sheilafleet.com and a little further is Deerness Distillery – producing award winning gin and vodka - www.deernessdistillery.com
Please note that in line with present Scottish legislation smoking is not permitted within Straigona. Smokers are welcome and are able to indulge under the covered porch in inclement weather, we do ask that you dispose of cigarette butts in the bin provided. We regret we are unable to accept pets as we have our own cats to consider.
PLEASE NOTE
Accommodation during The Nature Festival / Folk Festival (May) / St Magnus Festival (late June) and County Show Week (early August) can be booked up well in advance, please be aware if you are intending to visit Orkney during these times.
Orkney is full of folklore, stories, music and so much more! From the Neolithic to the part it played in the World Wars we hope there is something that you find of interest. To us Orkney is a magical place and we hope our guests experience that and enjoy their stay.
